General Indicators of Dyslexia

Signs of Dyslexia in Adults

If several of these "Symptoms" occur together, further advice should be sought.

1.

Those who have not had the right help may be covering up their difficulties and compensating in all sorts of ways - e.g. taking home forms to fill in, not writing letters, etc.

2.

They may still have great difficulties in taking instructions, in following conversations where the subject is changed, or in listening and taking notes in a meeting.

3.

They often say a similar word instead of the correct one; they have never heard it correctly in the first place and cannot get their tongue round it properly e.g. 'cerstificate' instead of certificate, 'pacific' instead of specific.

4.

They may have problems in putting across their ideas to other people.

5.

They often pay bills with cash so as not to use a chequebook.

6.

They may have problems reading maps and following directions.

7.

They will often avoid promotion in case their reading and spelling difficulties come to light.

8.

They may take unfulfilling jobs well below their capabilities, to avoid having to read, write things down or sometimes count.

9.

They may find difficulty in remembering appointments, getting to lectures at College on time, managing their time generally.
